I had a couple of harsh realities handed to me this week. My dog injured his leg playing around with my partner last night - and it was a glimpse into a possible future. He is a 72 lb golden with hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis. He’s had surgery on his right hind hip and probably needs it on his other. So far, we have been managing with pain meds and love. But last night, after roughhousing, he started limping and couldn’t get up to walk to the bedroom - so we carried him. FYI - he is mostly fine this morning, it was just a little tweak. But it was a realization of what we might have to deal with in the not-too-distant future. To add to that, Monday night, the day after my 9 mile run, my hip decided to give out as I walked from the car to the movie theater. I thought my partner was going to have to come pick me up. But the next day, I did some mobility work, and things have felt strong ever since. I know my hip tweak was because I did too much too soon and didn’t focus enough on active recovery and mobility afterward. (AND I sit like a goblin 😈 with my legs crisscrossed in my chair at my computer desk.) I also want to mention that you’ll never be completely consistent. That is a pipe dream. Life is constant change - even as stagnant as it can feel, there will always be some new thing stealing your attention. Consistency is a lie perfectionists tell themselves is possible. I created my Daily Walk Blueprint to help people get consistent with their walking habit. Do I actually think that they will do it daily? No. But doing it, more often than not, keeps your body limber, keeps your joints moving easily, and keeps your heart and mind healthier. And the more you do it, the better off you will be. The goal is frequency and to build this type of regular movement into your life so that it is something you crave, something you wake up and need to do, or you don’t feel ready for the day. Whatever your reasons for getting after a daily walk or any movement practice - the older you get, the more important it becomes, and the harder you fall when you take a break or stop for a period of time. So, learning a system that can help keep you going even when your motivation wanes, your schedule gets tighter, or the weather changes is imperative. While my Daily Walk Blueprint is designed to help you "build consistency," what it's really about is creating a strategic system that adapts to life's inevitable chaos. It's about showing up for yourself even when – especially when – things get messy. Because the alternative - waiting until your body screams at you to pay attention, that's a far more expensive lesson. This isn't just another “hit 10,000 steps" guide. It's a strategic system for making movement non-negotiable, using the exact CARAT system I use with my private clients.
Reply to this email if you have questions. I actually read and respond to these. If you already have the Blueprint, awesome! 🙌 Tell me how it’s going and what you’ve implemented already! |

I was listening to a podcast the other day on my walk, and one of the speakers talked about how she had gotten to her success in life because she had acted as if “she had the audacity of a white man.” And that struck a chord. How often do us, gender minorities, stay small, speak less, accept less, ask for less, and compromise our own well-being to make other people comfortable? I have been going through it these past few months and so much of my stress would be alleviated if I just set...
You do NOT need to do everything perfectly in order to get results. You just need to do a few things mostly well and consistently. I went through a bulk (where I was eating in a surplus to put on muscle) a couple years ago and I had a spreadsheet where I was tracking probably 20 different metrics - steps, sleep, protein, carbs, fat, fiber, my cycle, sleep, hydration, energy, measurements, weight, my lifts etc… And it while I THRIVE in data - even for me it was overwhelming each week to have...
