Perfectionism is a lie you're hiding behind.

I squashed my perfectionist brain yesterday and painted for the first time in maybe years. Instead of spending another day thinking about how much I wanted to do art, that I needed to set up a space, carve out some time, and dig out my art supplies buried deep in the dreaded junk closet, I took a straw from coaching. I asked myself, ‘How can I make this as low-lift as possible? What do I need? What keeps getting in the way? How can I lower the barrier to entry?’ We often get stuck in these...

I got a text immediately after getting into my car to head to the gym. “Your produce box is arriving in 20 min.” Ugh. I quickly calculated in my head - it would take me 15 min to get there, another hour to workout, and then 50 min to do my morning walk in the fancy neighborhood - that I had already put off. It’s 70 degrees out; there’s no way I can leave the box out for two hours. So I adjusted my plans, went back inside, and attempted to get back into “work mode.” It’s moments like this...

Well, I was going to have a newsletter come out today after a solid chunk of time with me staying silent and not knowing what to say - but the National Guard might be called on my city as ICE raids are happening to the good people of Los Angeles. And my sensitive soul is over here crying that we even have to protest this nonsense. But what can we do in the face of all of this? Return to our standards and our joy, now more than ever. This country, this government, doesn’t care about its...

I had a couple of harsh realities handed to me this week. My dog injured his leg playing around with my partner last night - and it was a glimpse into a possible future. He is a 72 lb golden with hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis. He’s had surgery on his right hind hip and probably needs it on his other. So far, we have been managing with pain meds and love. But last night, after roughhousing, he started limping and couldn’t get up to walk to the bedroom - so we carried him. FYI - he is mostly...

I’m 25 days out from a half-marathon race I haven’t been training for. Monster Mountain at mile 1.7 😳 And yet, I’m strangely confident. Have you ever committed to something you weren’t ready for and then didn’t give enough time to? As the days dwindle down, I’m reminded that consistent movement builds a foundation for spontaneous adventures. When you build movement into your life you can be ready to do things on a whim and tap into those benefits. Even though my run mileage has only brought...

The number of times I have created something and then didn’t put it out there because I didn’t believe it was good enough is absolutely absurd. The need to be perfect, to have things done to such a high standard, often means I stop before I even start. I know that there are certain methods of creating that bring me joy, but sometimes, when I sit down to do them, the ugly ego voice in my head won’t let me work without a constant onslaught of words, “This will never be good enough, you have no...

In doing research on how to have better more efficient launches, I discovered something fascinating: the same methodology Fortune 500 companies use to build billion-dollar products can transform your health habits. Srum methodology helps teams work towards a common goal. Like habit building, this project management framework starts with the end in mind. You decide on the vision and what you want to accomplish before making a task list. Each Quarter [a time box with multiple sprints], you meet...

I’ve sketched in my sketchbook 7 times this month. That may not seem like a lot, but compared to last year - where I sketched 15 times over the entire year, that’s a 641% increase in sketching so far! 7 times in 23 days. It’s really not a lot. But it’s a start. Each of those days required a concerted effort. I took out my sketchbook, sat down, and drew something for a period of time. I had to take time out of my busy day. I had to turn off all distractions and focus on the task. I had to set...

This is me checking in on your New Year’s Resolutions. How are you doing? Today is the day most people give up on their New Year resolutions when the new energy starts to wear off and the motivation falters and wanes. Now is the time I lean into the systems I’ve put in place to support the new habits I’m building. The first step is deciding on a specific behavior that will move you toward your goal and getting clear on your motivational drivers. What most people miss is that they really don’t...
